ME AND MY COMMODORE
by Alan Reed
Like Willis, I started with the
VIC-20 and stayed with it for about 3
years. It was the only computer my
parents could afford (thank you, Jack
Tramiel!); What a stroke of luck that
it also turned out to be a terrific
computer. I promised my parents I
wouldn't ask them to buy games for me
if I had my own computer, and they
made me hold to that. I learned a lot
about programming during those years.
Even after the C64 took over the
world, I felt great about my VIC. A 3K
Super Expander cartridge, combined
with the greater speed and nicer
looking programmable character
graphics made me quite satisfied with
the VIC's capabilities. Only after the
VIC suddenly blew up in 1985 or so did
I move on to the C64.
Now I use a C128, but I have a VIC
setup with a cassette drive and 1540
drive that still gets some of my
attention. I'll always have a
tremendous amount of nostalgia for the
VIC. To me, the VIC-20 is Commodore's
greatest contribution to the computing
world. It was the realization of
Tramiel's vision of a computer for the
masses. Without the creation of the
VIC, my parents would never have been
able to afford to buy me a computer.
Let's hear it for the VIC-20!
